Glorifying God in Our Relationships

Relationships. Good or bad, they’re a part of our lives.

Our first relationship begins when we are born. This family relationship includes a mother, father, grandparents, great grandparents, and so on, far back into time.

We have commercial relationships with vendors, bosses and co-workers. We are involved in digital relationships fostered by Facebook, Twitter and emails. We have "wave while driving by" relationships with our neighbors.

And, as children of God, we are part of spiritual relationships. We pray and care for our brothers and sisters in Christ. And we are loved, guarded and guided by God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.

So, what is God's will for us in all these relationships?

Psalm 24:1 states, “The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” This means that these relationships belong to Him. When we acknowledge His ownership over these too, we acknowledge we are stewards of our time, thoughts and actions toward – and with – others. Stewardship implies responsibility and accountability.

In other words, it matters what we say and do.

Because of this, I need to ask myself, "How would God have me relate to my husband, daughter, son, co-workers, friends, family, and community?" Ideally, I will praise and glorify my God and King together with them. At the very least, however, I will act with courage, kindness, honesty, and love.

Saint Francis of Assisi said it best: "Preach the Gospel at all times and, when necessary, use words."

How do you relate to the people in your life? What do you need to do more of? What do you need to do less of?
