A Harvest of Health

"Fruits" by Maciej Lewandowski on Flickr under CC BY-SA 2.0Since the beginning of the year, I have been trying to eat better, especially trying to get more fresh fruits and vegetables into my diet. It hasn’t been an easy thing for me to do and there are many days I falter in my eating habits. For one, food containing tons of empty calories is all-too-convenient, and it tends to be much cheaper than healthy food. It’s also hard to give up drinking soda and eating candy and processed foods.

One day, about four months into my healthy food endeavor, my pastor was giving a message about the spiritual laws of sowing and reaping. I thought about my grandpa, who was a farmer. I knew when he planted seeds of wheat, he was going to get a field of wheat in return. Spiritually speaking, I know that if I plant seeds of kindness, I can expect kindness in return. I realized that this same principle of planting seeds and reaping the harvest could help me as I strived to make healthier food choices (watching what I ate, cutting back on fast food) and take better care of myself (getting up and moving more).

But, like I said, this is sometimes much easier said than done, especially if poor eating habits and lack of exercise have been the way of life for many years. And I can honestly tell you that sowing these good seeds of health has been a struggle for me. Still, I continue to pray that God will help me in my endeavors and that He will give me wisdom and guidance on how to plant the good seeds of health in my life. I am convinced that one of the reasons He wants me to be healthy is so I can have the energy and stamina to do His will and to fulfill the destiny He has planned for me. Honestly, I know I won’t be able to do it if I’m too sick and tired all the time!

Galatians 6:10 says, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” In other words, God doesn’t want me to tire of trying to attain better health. He wants me to know there will come a day when I reach all of my health goals -- as long as I don’t give up.

Do you think God wants you well? Why? What is one thing you can do today to start planting good seeds of health in your life?

Healthy Choices For Powerhouse Living
Posted By SHEILAHRN on October 14, 2014
Cari,I had to read your message again today as my devotional. Jesus is really bringing it home to me that I need to start watching my diet; 15 lbs of extra weight is weighing me down with my energy levels. I put on the extra pounds by looking to food to relieve anxiety, sugar is a quick pick-me-up but does not last very long and brings on a lot of extra inflammation in my body that I do not need. I will be standing with you with praying for a healthier lifestyle of eating, so that I can formost do God's will and keep up with all my responsibilities. Thanks for the Good Words!
