Let Us Do Good

Yesterday I wrote about my ongoing battle with Restless Leg Syndrome, a condition that leaves me sleep deprived and exhausted. Although my body often feels worn and weary, my spirit is driven to love my family and bless others as much as possible, despite my fatigue.

I have been both challenged and comforted by the words of Galatians 6:9-10, which exhorts us to "not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers."

What does doing good look like? For me, it's simple actions, things that anyone can do:

  • Love your husband and children well, speaking their individual love languages.
  • Take care of your home, making it a lovely place of solitude and rest.

  • Be a good steward of your health, taking care of your body, which is God’s dwelling place.
  • Renew your mind by saturating it with the Word of God.
  • Refresh your spirit by communicating with the Lord daily in an intimate, relational way.
  • Create accountability and community by fellowshipping with other believers at your local church, attending Bible studies, small groups, and plugging into ministries.
  • Give your time, treasure and talent to people and causes that are honorable and eternal.
  • Support your friends, partnering with them on their journeys.
  • Send a handwritten note (a lost art) to a struggling friend in need of cheer.
  • Flash a smile to brighten someone’s day.
  • Recognize a need and fill it, which is just another way of saying "lend a helping hand."
  • Provide an intently listening ear and warm, genuine concern.
  • Hold a hurting person’s hand.
  • Lead people to Jesus, the author of life, the source of true joy, and the Redeemer of souls.

Regardless of our level of health, energy, our age, or whatever we feel handicapped or hindered by, we can all do something to love with excellence all the precious souls the Lord has placed within our sphere of influence. True riches are found in loving and and serving others. There is no greater joy than to be needed and necessary.

What issues -- habits, hang-ups, hurts or health struggles -- seem to inhibit you from living a rich, fully abundant life which blesses others and brings you personal satisfaction? Whatever you’re facing, just surrender it to the Lord and watch what He can do through your willing, obedient heart!

She has suffered with depression for all of her adult life and wonders if some day she will have a unique opportunity to share her story of hope and perseverance. She heartily believes that Jesus has been good to her, showing her that life can still be blessed even through adversity and trials. Read more articles by Heather.

Heather! Thank you for the practical tips for doing good for others! BTW, I have found relief from RLS with Hawthorne Berries. I got the tip from the Dr. Gott column a few years ago. It works! Susan
