Sowing Leadership
June 10, 2014By Sheila Heiser

"And goodness is the harvest that is produced from the seeds the peacemakers plant in peace." (James 3:18)

I've come to the conclusion that we all sow seeds of leadership every single day, whether we envision ourselves as leaders or not. Every single decision we make in a day, whether nonchalant or heartfelt, has the power to mold our very character and exert an impact on those surrounding us. Those people include not only friends and family, but our co-workers, the cashier at Walmart, the nurse at the doctor’s office, the telemarketer that calls at an annoying time, the driver who cuts in front of you, and anyone else God puts in your pathway every day.

As we come into contact with others, let alone pour our lives into others, we find ourselves being influential. This is how we walk in leadership. Depending on what's in our hearts, we either equip people, or we strip people

One field I love to sow into is my twin daughters’ lives. I am amazed at what my impressionable little girls soak up from spending time with me -- my attitudes, my phrases, my mannerisms, my conduct, and my faith. When they were two-years old, I was blessed to receive a thank-you letter from their daycare provider who pointed out that she had never seen such working empathy in such young children. As their mommy I consider myself benevolent in various ways, and it delighted my heart that my little darlings were emulating such kindheartedness with their playmates. Nonetheless, I am daily humbled and reminded all too well of other not-so-wonderful mommyisms that my girls daily display.

As a leader-in-training, I cannot afford to discount the tremendous blessing of life. In the trenches of my life I have discovered my leadership style. Sometimes it took several years before I saw the “good fruit” come forth from certain hardships, but God was faithful to reap a harvest of a more resilient faith and a more patient and sensitive heart towards others who have similarly struggled. I now lead or sow out of the “good fruits” reaped from struggle and God’s delivering power in my life.

Leaders create leaders, so I am thankful for my mentors who have sown their very lives into mine by listening, praying, counseling, and admonishing me to be a strong woman full of God’s purposes. Their examples of God's love in my life have equipped me to be a wise farmer, to pour good seed into God’s people around me.

Leadership is wrought in sweat and tears, not just in prose.
There is a wiping of the brow as a person matures and grows.
In some circumstances, some leaders are born to gain,
Nonetheless, the lessons of refining character still remain.
Customized, tailored, and fitted to meet every single stride
Through a God who spurns the turning of each tide.
It is He who calmly beckons humility to stand strong
Earnestly changing that which has gone wrong.
Only those who are brave enough step up to the plate
Inspired by history, faith, and vision, not merely fate.
Believing the best of those he has been called to lead
Knowing it is all in the planting of good seed
Daily watering, watching, pruning and guarding in love
Nurturing the treasured gifts given from above.
A leader is not a leader in and of himself you know
He is actually created as he reaches to sow
Into the very lives of those surrounding him
Likened to a trunk of a tree…graced by the limbs.

Who have been the leaders that have walked through your life? I encourage you today to pause in the chaos of your schedule and truly take time to thank God for the goodness you have received through these leaders. Contemplate and rejoice in what they have sown into your life and the changes in your heart and thinking that have been the outcome.

I loved your appreciation of all the kinds of fields we have as opportunities to sow into...God's Holy Spirit will certainly let us know which lives, "fields" we are to sow into with leadership. I also appreciated how you pointed out that it takes time and patience to see the results in people's lives as we sow seeds of God's goodness. I can certainly relate with your comment that it takes "careful tending" over the fields of people's lives before the fruit comes forth.
Thank-you Fran for your response

I was blessed how you pointed out the importance of every decision we make in a day. It reminds me that nothing is ever trivial in God's sight but full of purpose. Thank-you, Fran!

Thank-you for sharing what you learned as you read Sowing Leadership. It is amazing to me as we look at the good fruits that God has brought forth from our own individual struggles in life that He knew all along what He was doing. Years ago I had a hard time sharing up out of my heart but because of God's healing touch I am able to share more freely...I appreciate your response.
Thank-you for your response Polly

Thank-you for sharing on Sowing Leadership. God was obviously speaking to your heart as you welled up with thanksgiving to Him. This is what excites me about blogging, I never have the final say on what I write, but the Holy Spirit speaks into each life because He knows exactly what we need. So thank-you for your testimony, Polly...it so blessed me.
Fantastic!

Love this post, Sheila. I know you are truly writing straight from your heart. I can especially relate when you say, " Sometimes it took several years before I saw the “good fruit” come forth from certain hardships, but God was faithful to reap a harvest of a more resilient faith" this has been so true for me as well! I look forward to reading more from you!
Sowing Leadership [At Any Age]

Sheila, many thanks for your blog post today. The topic is very timely for me. As a silver-haired granny and retired from a very active career people periodically ask me what I'm doing or better yet, what I'm going to do with my time. At various times throughout my life God placed in me definite leadership roles and what is to stop Him or me now? So, I tell folks I have more time to serve my family, volunteer in my church and community using those leadership skills He provided and continues to hone and develop in me each day.

For me, leadership requires continued commitment couple with personal and spiritual growth as well as striving to be a positive role-model to others, especially for children and youth, in my daily walk with God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. What better examples for me than the three of them as I strive daily to overcome my daily sins; to emulate their leadership skills in my life through unconditional love and service to my family members and others I encounter each day.fc

I can only repeat what you've written about leaders and mentors in your life, "Leader create leaders..." and my mentors did the same for me. Each day I thank God for the opportunities He's placed before me throughout my life. When I was challenged far beyond what I thought I could ever bare, God was there. When Jesus took on my sins and wept, God was there. When I was truly converted and saved as a Christian and follower of Jesus Christ, God was there. When I changed my thoughts or actions at home or work through the promptings of the Holy Spirit, God was there. God kept and keeps His promises and I try my best to do the same. God created me and molded me into a learner and a leader to serve in His kingdom on earth. I recognize and thank him daily for that, I am here

"Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done... ." ~~ Matthew 16:24-27

Your post gives me good food for thought, Sheila. I'm reminded how important every decision is--to mold my character and to influence others around me.
Thank you for the reminder.

Thank you, Sheila, for reminding me that there are all kinds of fields we each have the opporunity to sow into. And for the reminder that seeing the fruit of what we plant often requires patience and careful tending.
